After 7 months preparation the first British march against unemployment
job insecurity and social exclusion gets underway at Preston today.
There will be about 30 marchers starting on the NW leg and 20
on the NE leg. The majority will be marching all the way to Amsterdam.
Latest sponsors of the marches include Socialist Campaign Group
Labour MPs Billy Etherington, John Cryer, John McDonnell, and
Lynne Jones. Jimmy McCaulay aged 85 an original Jarrow marcher
will lead the NE march off on Monday 19 May. This has generated
major local press interest. The march will be addressed by Billy
Etherington and by the Righ Revd Ambrose Griffiths the Bishop
of Hexham and Newcastle.
All major problems along the route have been sorted out, and the
marchers are looking forward to putting the message across of
our march against Maastricht poverty. The final 8 page edition
of Euromarch News is now out including articles by Jeff Martin
(UNISON London Region Convenor), Alan Simpson MP, an interview
with Christophe Aguiton, Secretary of the European marches, and
details of the London and Amsterdam march events. Make sure your
organisation has ordered a bundle and they get paid for promptly.
Many organisations have sponsored the marches but need chasing
to get their donations in. Check that yours has.
We have also ordered badges from France with the foot logo with
"marches europeennes" on them. Price L1 each. They should
prove very popular. Keep the speaker invitations flowing in. For
example, now that the general election is finally over, Labour
Parties will be meeting again. We need to make the maximum political
impact and make the marches central to the concerns of labour
movement activists.
On behalf of the Campaign Group Alan Simpson will be writing to
Tony Blair, Robin Cook, David Blunkett, and Gordon Brown requesting
that they meet the marchers to discuss the issues involved in
the campaign.
London events: details of the London events June 7/8 have been
previously circulated. Tickets for the London social Sat June
7 at ULU (L6 waged, L3 unwaged) are now available. The London
Committee meets every Weds at Conway Hall Red Lion Sq (Holborn
