The Luxembourg Demonstration - numerically, a clear success
The Luxembourg demonstration of November 20, united over more than 30 000
participants coming from all Europe.
The Luxembourg delegation headed the cortege with nearly 2000 trade
unionists. They were followed by smaller groups of delegations from
Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy. There were many thousands in the DGB
German group. Then came the Belgian delegation, who were not only the
most combative, but probably the largest group of all and even more so,
in relation to the size of their population. The French, with over 10 000
participants, ended the cortege.
The march demonstration was no doubt the liviest. A musical accompaniment
by the Luxembourg brass band added greatly to the atmosphere. They were
made up of around 2000 people and were grouped together with the Belgian
contingent. The delegations' banners and slogans made it very European
affair. Also included were those delegations, such as Great Britain and
Holland, who came despite their national official trade union movement
boycotting the demonstration. The visual presence of the European Marches
throughout the cortege, was also due to the Luxembourg committee's
ingenuous idea of giving out to all delegates, a white "pocho" in plastic
which proved to be a wonderful protection against a persistant rain
during the beginning of the demonstration. The "poncho" carried the
Marches' logo with the foot symbol on one side and on the other side
carried the slogan : "unemployment y basta" (that enough of that!).
Directly after the demonstration, an open meeting took place. Amongst
contributions, was a report from the Dutch comarades on the findings of
the official investigative commission into the arbitary and illegal
arrests made by the police during the Amsterdam European March Rally.
Latest information : Paris. More than 100 participants of the French
delegation sucessfully travelled to the Luxembourg demonstration by train
on a "free transport for the unemployed" operation from the Gare de l'Est
in spite of police attempts to prevent them.
