marches97-forum --------------- MINUTES OF THE EUROPEAN MARCHES COORDINATION MEETING, PARIS, JANUARY 10, 1998.
Delegations present : Finland, France, Germany, Great Bretagne, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
We include a copy of the message of support from the European Marches to the French Unemployment movement. We have received overwhelming support and messages from Europe. Actions in support of the unemployment movement in France took place in Germany, Spain, Luxembourg and Holland, moreover our Belgian neighbours even organised a cortège of around a 100 people to join the Paris demonstration on Saturday, January 17.
The second part of the Coordination meeting, was devoted to the network calendar for 1998 and 1999. (Apologies for the delay, but the pace of the unemployment movement here barely allowed breathing space between actions).
Here is the proposed agenda for the next European Assizes against unemployment, job insecurity and social exclusion, to be held in Brussels over two days, Avril 18 and 19, 1998. The Assizes will be held at the Free University of Brussels, for about 400 participants (half from Begium, the other half from other network member countries). The choice of date means that it is not too close to May 1st. (an important date for each country to mobilise people, as our friends from Spain observed, while it might even be possible to plan a joint day of action f orLabour day, as suggested by our Italian camarades). Another important date is May 3rd, the official date for the introduction of the Euro. May 1st, is also the entry date in Europe of the Children's March. The Assizes should give us an opportunity to examine ways for developing a common position on the Single Money question, to launch an appeal for May 1st, look at the 35 hour week question, and to work out possible initiatives in each country during the change over period to the Euro.
The second part of the meeting discussed Great Britain's initiatives for the next European Summit due to be held in Cardiff in June 1998. As observed by the British delegate, if we are not present in Cardiff, then the British people will totally ignore the Summit. We asked our British friends to provide more details of their initiatives (a meeting is planned for January 21st ). Each national delegation has been asked to study possibilities for sending representatives.
The Summer school in Greece planned in August is taking shape. The problem we face is financing the cost of traval, as it is clear that the Summer school should also be open to those who do not have the means for paying traval costs! A Youth initiative around France and Italy is also planned sometime in summer 1998.
We also think it would be a good idea to be take part in actions based on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of Man, planned for the end of 1998.
Finally, the next most important date is the middle of June, 1999, in Germany. It is essential for the network to prepare for it. Also to reflet on the fact that the Brussels Assizes offers an ideal occasion to launch appeals, plan a calendar of events and choose locations for mobilisations, and to think about the German timetable (Cologne, Central Bank in Frankfort...).
At the end of the meeting, a mandat was given to the French Coordination to continue running the European Secretariat, and to publish a French and English version of the bulletin. Each national or regional member has the right to make use of the bulletin as they think appropriate to their needs. We plan bringing out the next issue at the beginning of February and to concentrate on current events in France with reactions from other countries. For a European overview of events in France, please send us your contributions (in French or English) as soon as possible to be included in the next issue of the network bulletin.
