THE FIGHT OF THE FRENCH UNEMPLOYED IS SUPPORTED BY THE EUROPEAN NETWORK AGAINST UNEMPLOYMENT, JOB INSECURITY AND SOCIAL EXCLUSION
The Coordination of the European Marches network against unemployment, jobinsecurity and social exclusion, held their meeting in Paris, on Saturday, January 10, 1998. They expressed their solidarity for the unemployed and their associations with encouragement for their struggle still continuing into the second month.
The French trade unions and unemployment associations, members of the network, are playing an active role. Delegations from Finland, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Great Britain, Sweden, Luxembourg and Germany, confirmed reports of support and encouragement from all over Europe for the French unemployment movement actions. This proves that only social struggle can make the situation really change.
After the first series of successful actions, this legitimate struggle opens up possibilities for the unemployment movement in Europe. We all have same demands that cut across frontiers, such as the demand for a decent income, the reduction of the working week, leading to real job creation, with no flexibilty, no cuts in salary. Our common demands are totally opposed to liberal economic thinking on the redistribution of wealth now dominating Europe. We vigourously oppose the French government's choice of using the police against the unemployed - avoiding, rather than looking at their fundamental demands concerning their drastic economic situation.
Different European delegations plan to organise ways of expressing their solidarity with the French unemployment movement. This shows how the fight against unemployment, job insecurity and social exclusion can expand and develop on a European scale. They plan a Day of European Solidarity on January 17, to take place at the same time as the national demonstration for the unemployed in all towns and cities in France.
