The band of four
The French press quickly named the main unemployment associations as
the "band of four". These four are AC! APEIS, CGT-Unemployed and
MNCP. Notice the strict alphabetical order. While all try to be
united, each group is conscious of protocol, and an alphabetical
order is useful way for avoiding susceptibilities.
Already for some time, this has become a form of ritual, the three
association of the unemployed, whether they share actions or not, are
identifed by their initals; AC ! APEIS, MNCP. The CGT- travailleurs
privés d'emploi (workers without jobs) has found its place thanks to the unity of the movement. However, the name itself is too long
and GCT-TPR is somewhat heavy, so CGT chômeurs (unemployed) was chosen instead.
Of the four, there are only two organisations strictly speaking,
unemployment organisations (APEIS and MNCP), an association to fight
against unemployment (AC!) which regroups wage-earners, trade
unionists and the unemployed (including MNCP) and the unemployed wing
of the CGT which is the most important confederation among French
trade unions "representative," or recognised by public authorities.
The "four" take decisions for joint actions at informal unitary
meetings.
