Dear friends!
Maybe you have already received informations about the European campaign against unemployment. It was a French initiative in 1996, an initiative that arose in a country with a long tradition of struggles against unemployment and pauperization. In the meantime more than 100 organisations and social initiatives came together for a broad mass-campaign in Europe against unemployment, unsafe jobs and discrimination. Organisations, initiatives, activists of EuroMarch act in Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, Netherland, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Austria; forces of unemployed and Trade Unions from CFDT (F), TUC (GB), CGIL (I) or ÖGB (A) support the EuroMarch-campaign too.
The EuroMarch-platform stands against an unemployment of (official) 20.000.000 and a pauperization of 50.000.000 in EU-Europe. Instead of empty governmental resolutions EuroMarch demands European marches for an Europe of full employment, for new taxes of finance-speculation, for a massive reduction of working time without losses of wages etc. A mobilisation of all women and men, employed and unemployed, young people and old people in whole Europe is necessary (see Florence Appeal below).
In April 1997 we want to start those marches with an European day of Action. Until June 14th and 15th a track of actions should take place: demonstrations and rallies running from town to town. EuroMarch Austria proposes in May the first route to Vienna: EuroMarch Vienna should >>welcome<< thousands of activists from Styria, Lower Austria but also from Hungary, Ex-Yugoslavia or Czechia, Slovacia in a big rally and festival against unemployment and for social welfare in >>Annother Europe<<
Other marching-routes of EuroMarch are projected i.e. from Ireland via London, North-France, Belgium to Amsterdam. The stations of EuroMarch in Austria/Germany are planned from Vienna via Linz, Munich to Amsterdam. Around 28th May the European Federation of Trade Unions (EGB) will organize an European week of actions. The highlight of EuroMarch should be reached at 14th and 15th June with big demonstrations and rallies in Amsterdam; there is also proposed an Alternative European Conference.
We think it would be very important that also activists from Eastern Europe will take part in EuroMarch. So we ask you
1) What do you think of EuroMarch-initiatives in Eastern Europe?
2) What do you think of the proposal for an international day of action mid of April 1997?
3) .What do you think of a big >>welcome<< of East European activists in Vienna May 1997?
4) Do you know activists who wants to take part in the demonstrations and an Alternative Conference in Amsterdam June 14th and 15th?
EuroMarch is an >>unity of actions<<. But within EuroMarch there exist various political opinions and perspectives in the struggle against unemployment: positions for a reform of EU on the one side, intransigent opposition against EU and Maastricht on the other; a policy for social criterias in Maastricht-contract versus positions of European Generalstrike for workers-power against the capitalist crisis etc.. EuroMarch is based only on the platform, willing to organize the unemployed, workers, women, youth etc. in EuroMarch.
Please answer as soon as possible,
with best regards
Karl Fischbacher
